What Filter Size is Right for Me?
Size doesn’t always matter, but in the case of your air filter – it really does. If you select the wrong size filter, your AC unit will not keep out the harmful pollutants you don’t want to breathe in.
The most common sizes are: 10 X 20 X 1’’, 14 X 20 X 1’’, 16 X 24 X 1’’, 18 X 30 X 1”. And luckily, there is an easy way to measure what size is right for you.
But What Do the Measurements Correspond To?
Let’s get right down to it. If a filter labeled 10” X 20” X 1” is 10 inches long, 20 inches wide, and one inch deep. Sounds simple enough right? The only issue is there are two types of measurements when it comes to air filters: the actual size and the nominal size.
The actual size is exactly what it sounds like – but the nominal size is a rounded up estimation that many brands use to keep consistent. Generally, both measurements will do the job even if they are slightly different.
How to Know It’s the Right Size
You will know quickly whether your filter is the right size. Upon installation, if you have to force it or bend it at all – it’s the wrong size. If it fits fine on insertion but you notice a loud rattle or an overnight increase in dust – it’s the wrong size.
Once you find the size that works for you, make sure to swap out the filter every 60 days to keep you and your family breathing right!
